Project Overview

Harwyn delivered three purpose-built modular music pods for Caulfield Grammar School’s Wheelers Hill campus, helping the school respond to growing demand for instrumental music tuition. Installed in a single day during school holidays, the new facilities are now known as the Nick Mulder Music Precinct.

The Challenge

Caulfield Grammar School’s music program had grown significantly, with demand for instrumental lessons outpacing the availability of suitable teaching spaces.

Existing classrooms and shared spaces were being used where possible, but they were not designed for one-on-one or small-group music tuition. Waiting lists continued to grow, timetables became increasingly stretched and the school needed a more sustainable solution.

Any new facility also needed to integrate naturally into the campus, minimise disruption and reinforce the importance of music within school life.

The Solution

Harwyn designed and delivered three custom modular music pods tailored specifically for instrumental learning.

The pods were acoustically treated and designed to support focused one-on-one and small-group tuition. Carpet, sound insulation and acoustic wall treatments created comfortable, high-performing spaces that allow students to learn without distraction.

The pods were installed in a central location opposite the main staff room, ensuring they became part of the daily life of the campus rather than being hidden away.

Manufactured off-site and installed in a single day during school holidays, the project was completed with almost no disruption to teaching and learning.

The Outcome

The new music pods immediately increased the school’s capacity for instrumental tuition, removing waiting lists and easing pressure on the timetable.

Students, staff and parents have responded very positively to the new facilities, which provide inspiring, comfortable and highly functional spaces for music learning.

The completed precinct, now known as the Nick Mulder Music Precinct, has strengthened one of the school’s flagship programs while honouring an important member of the school community.
