We recently sat down with Harwyn’s architect, Selwyn Blackstone, to reflect on the challenges he faced when designing the pod, and how he managed to pull off such a beautiful end product.
What were the first things you considered when presented with the design brief for Harwyn?
There were a lot of ideas floating around in my head at the beginning. I wanted to combine aesthetics and external and internal finishes that could be colour selected to blend with the individual environment. I wanted the pods to be fully insulated with a leak-proof panel structure, portable with no maintenance and with no requirement for foundations. They had to be designed to allow for good natural lighting and ventilation. I also wanted the Harwyn to be capable of changing form (to allow for joining pods together to make more room) and able to add other facilities (such as a bathroom and kitchen). I was dreaming big, and I’m very happy with the result!
How quickly did you turn the design around?
Once the concept was established it took no time at all. It basically just fell into place!
What was the biggest challenge when designing the Harwyn?
I’d say it was establishing the construction system that suited all the brief’s requirements.
What are some other notable projects you’ve worked on?
I’ve worked on a number of residential and commercial projects, including a dental clinic in Elsternwick, boutique apartments in Caulfield North and a beach house in Somers.
What is your favourite feature of the Harwyn?
I love the use of the ACM’s metallic finish that changes in the different light and position of the observer, and reflects the surrounding landscape. I also like how the interior reflects the external finish.
